INTENSE training and determination paid dividends for Berwick Secondary College when its open-age girls' team won a bronze medal at last week's Australian Volleyball Schools Cup.
The team, made up of year 10 and 11 girls, fared extremely well in the high-quality national competition, which also included teams from New Zealand and Japan.
Kristen Robinson, who runs the volleyball program at the college, said the girls controlled the medal play-off game from the start, served strongly and received well.
"We've got some strong hitters and, given that most of the girls are only 17, they did very well, winning convincingly against Brighton [from South Australia] 25-17 and 25-18.
"Next year the girls will go up to open-age division 1 and that will be a lot tougher, so they will have to really hone their skills."
Ms Robinson said the school fielded six teams this year - four girls' teams and two boys' teams.
"We've been doing volleyball at the school for probably 12 or 13 years, and this was probably our best year so far.
"It would be good to get some more medals next year.
"So, in the new year, training will recommence and we'll be gearing towards the Victorian school competitions and next year's Australia Schools Cup."
The annual Australian Volleyball Schools Cup was held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre at Albert Park and the State Volleyball Centre at Dandenong stadium.
