A FORMER world-ranked tennis player and 20-year coach has been appointed facility manager of the new Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre.
Paul Kleverlaan, who still plays on the International Tennis Federation's senior circuit, reached a career-high No. 7 in the world in 2006. He is now getting ready to manage the Webster Way centre, due to open later this month.
"It's a state-of-the-art facility and will be great for the community, particularly for young people to come down and have a hit on the courts," Kleverlaan said.
"The centre will provide the community with the opportunity to host some elite tournaments, and also cater for recreational players."
He encouraged tennis clubs, schools and youth groups to make use of the 18 floodlit courts, which feature True Blue Plexi Cushion surfaces - the same as those used at Rod Laver Arena.
Kleverlaan said Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre would provide a much-needed back-up for tennis clubs struggling for court space at their own club.
The seven-days-a-week centre includes a licensed function room with accommodation for 150 people.
