YOUNG Cranbourne tennis enthusiasts Markus Kreher and Jacob Rowe are in the spotlight during this month's Australian Open.
Markus and Jacob are part of a team of more than 300 Aviva ballkids from around Australia and the Asia Pacific region, chosen from thousands of applicants. Markus and Jacob went through an extensive selection and training process, beginning with practice sessions in November and December where they were tested for fitness, ball skills and, most importantly, attitude.
Jacob said that practising ball skills and keeping fit had been important in developing his skills. "I practise by rolling tennis balls in the hallway at home and have also been exercising to keep fit," Jacob said.
Marcus said he applied to become an Aviva ballkid because he wanted to be part of an international sporting event and to have the opportunity to work with and support his favourite player Tommy Haas.
Allan Griffiths, chief executive officer of Aviva Australia, said he was proud of the Aviva ballkids' effort, their hard work and their determination. The ball-'boys' were selected from thousands of applicants aged 12 to 15, including 20 from Korea and four from India.
They will receive a contribution from Aviva and the Commonwealth Government.
