If TURNING tears into triumph is the hallmark of a top player, Narre Warren teenager Emily Wilson has a bright future.
Just weeks ago Wilson, 15, who also plays in the Cranbourne North Netball Club's open mixed team, was devastated after missing the final cut for the Victorian Catholic Schoolgirls' under-16 state team.
But the next day, she jumped back on the court as part of a Frankston and District Netball Association team and went home in triumph as a member of the new under-15s representative state titleholders.
"I was really upset and I did cry [about missing out]. But it gave me more determination to prove that I was good enough to get into the [Catholic schoolgirls'] team,'' she said.
Adding to the fairytale ending, Wilson, who is this week's Sports Star, was later invited to join the team she had failed to make just days before.
She will compete in the U16s section at the national Catholic schoolgirls' titles in Adelaide from September 26 to October 4.
In a further boost, the year 9 student at St Francis Xavier College's Berwick campus last week that she had been selected to join the central south-east zone of Netball Victoria's Zone Academy training program.
Wilson has been a keen netballer for almost five years.
Cranbourne North Netball Club's Michele Brownley described Wilson as a beautiful player and person.
"When she was 12 she got into the state primary school's team but she's not the sort of kid that goes around bragging or getting a big head. She loves the game and I believe she can go all the way to the top,'' she said.
Mother Nicola, who structures her work schedule around Wilson's training sessions, said she is her daughter's No.1 fan.
"She will be bruised and bleeding and she just gets up again and keeps playing,'' she said.
Wilson, who wants to eventually work with animals, expects her team to do "pretty well'' at the national titles. But the joy of playing the game is more important to her than trophies.
"It's the thing I love the most,'' she said.
