Victorian Netball League : Peninsula Waves shore up team

18 Oct, 2011 12:00 AM
PENINSULA Waves has secured a coaching team with more than 70 years of experience for the next Victorian Netball League season.

Championship coach Robynn Pym, who has over 25 years' coaching experience, has been reappointed.

New signings Claire Houben (division 1) and Shelley Haynes (under 19) both have over 20 years in the bank. Steve Murray will be Pym's assistant.

Pym said she was excited by the additions to the Waves' coaching panel. "When Claire Houben came along it was great - she is very experienced and I have known her for a long time," she said.

"With Shelley Haynes her netball career is starting to come to an end and her experience will be great for the young girls - she has played for Australia in Masters and played for Victoria."

The Waves have also re-signed Malawian import Mwai Kumwenda in a boost to their chances of bettering last season's promising seventh place.

Pym had a warning about the impact the star shooter could have on the league next season.

"None of the ANZ teams had an import spot open so she came back to us. We've become a bit of a family for her and we're looking forward to her having an even better year - not that she had a bad one last year - but adapting to the culture better."

The club has also made another important acquisition with Victorian team athletics sprint coach Nathan Bonney named fitness adviser.

Bonney is also the physical preparation coach for the VFL umpiring department.

Netball Victoria recently announced that all the current 10 licencees in the VNL competition would retain their licences for a further three years.

■ Selections for next year's Peninsula Waves teams are on October 23 at Patterson River Secondary College and October 24 (Peninsula School). Selection forms are available from fdna.com.au/penin sula-waves.html

Experienced: Shelley Haynes, Robynn Pym and Claire Houben will bring plenty of insight to the Waves.
