NARRE Warren South residents Iain and Wilma Stevenson became the first bowlers to play in three winning teams at the Dandenong and District Charity Bowls Day.
The event was held at Dandenong Bowls Club on February 12. The Stevensons added this year's competition to wins in 2003 and 2008, although they have paired with different bowlers in their other wins.
Tom Irving (skip), from the Dandenong Club Bowls Club, and Julie Galloway (2nd) from Dandenong RSL-Recreation Bowls Club teamed with Iain Stevenson (lead), from the Narre Warren Bowls Club, and Wilma Stevenson (3rd), also from Dandenong RSL-Recreation Bowls Club, to claim the $500 prize along with their place on the Wal Turner Shield.
Iain Stevenson said the win was a bonus for his team, which entered the competition to enjoy a day of bowls.
He thanked Irving and Galloway for joining the team after their usual teammates were unavailable to play. "It's a nice competition to play in. You meet some nice people and we were fortunate to win it for a third time. "
Organisers have moved next year's event back to March 24 to attract more players. Many have been unable to enter as pennant season is still under way. Iain Stevenson said he agreed with the move and looked forward to a bigger event next year.
"A lot of people don't want to play again on a Sunday after playing pennant on Saturday, so by moving it back a lot more people will look forward to it and getting in their game of bowls."
He said winning alongside his wife was the best part of winning the day.
"It's a really good atmosphere and we enter each year so we can both enjoy a game of bowls and have a day out together."
Runner-up was the team of David Taylor (skip), Marilyn Mulcock (lead), Joan Grant (2nd) and Noel Daly (3rd) from the Keysborough Bowls Club and they received $240 for the team and individual trophies.
With the exception of David Taylor, that is the same team that won in 2009.
One of the major beneficiaries of this year's event, the 26th charity day, will be Eastern Palliative Care. The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Noble Park, in conjunction with a committee with representatives of all lawn bowls clubs in the city and Roy Aspinall from Highway Bowls Centre.
An Opening Spider was won by Cathie Close.
