Classy Cosmic Rumble in fastest win

12 Oct, 2009 08:00 AM
COSMIC Rumble staked his claim for a group 1 Sky Channel Topgun berth with an emphatic win in the $14,500 Bill Collins Memorial at Sandown Park last Thursday night.

Now in the care of leading Devon Meadows trainer Darren McDonald, the former NSW chaser was given plenty of room from box 2. The son of Spiral Nikita took full advantage, driving underneath Queenslander Queen Lauryn to take the early lead.

Cosmic Rumble opened up a three-length lead down the back straight and looked to have the race at his mercy before Queen Lauryn took off in pursuit.

The dual group 1 winner was having her first race start in almost a month and loomed up to threaten on the home turn. However, Cosmic Rumble proved too good in the run to the line to win by three lengths in a slick 29.58 seconds.

The win was the fastest at the Lightwood Road venue in more than six months. Consistent open-class greyhound Velocette finished strongly a further 7.75 lengths away in third. All three greyhounds will come under close scrutiny for selection in the final Topgun field.

Earlier in the night, Amity Bale demolished a class field by 8.5 lengths in 41.99 seconds in a heat of the group 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial.

Amity Bale sat behind early leader Headley Bale for most of the race before making her move approaching the final turn and racing into favouritism for a fourth group race title. Her chances improved further after drawing box 1 for the final.

The improving Drill 'Em won his sixth race in a row when he defeated national distance champion Jarvis Bale by 5.75 lengths in 42.27 seconds.

The final of the $36,000 group 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial will be run at Sandown Park this Thursday night.
