Berwick seniors make a clean sweep

28 Apr, 2008 03:12 PM
A SOLID defence and precise passing were the secrets of success for Berwick in its A grade match against Hampton Park in round 2 of the Casey Cardinia Netball League.

The Wickers controlled the match in the mid-court and, with a solid defence, and accurate passing to their goalies, were comfortable 51-18 winners in a team effort.

Jodie Cranston, Rebekah Vickers and Sarah Kane led the way for Berwick.

In B grade, Berwick overcome a slow start to defeat Hampton Park 69-27.

The Wickers' defence, led by Casey Anderson, Sharon McCormick and Jodie Evans, applied intense pressure on the opposition forwards and forced a lot of turnovers.

The Berwick C grade team made it a hat-trick of victories, defeating Hampton Park 55-9.

The forwards capitalised on every scoring opportunity. An injury to Alana Cary forced changes in the mid-court but the team adjusted quickly and took the momentum into the next quarter.

Berwick kept Hampton Park scoreless in the second quarter with strong defensive pressure from Jenny Randle and Caitlin Meharry.

Dana Bell entered the game at half-time for her first senior game and quickly found her rhythm and timing.

The under 17s kept Berwick's winning streak going, defeating Hampton Park 28-6.

After just one game, Berwick under 13s have gelled quickly and defeated Hampton Park 42-6.

With Caitlin Taylor back dominating the centre, and Stacey and Lauren Hargreaves combining well in wing attack and goal attack, the first half was a frenetic affair with fast ball movement and silky skills on display.

Emily Fairbairn was laser-like in goals, scoring from all positions and playing the baseline well.

In round 2 of the Dandenong District Netball Association Saturday competition, the under-11 Berwick Bluebirds 3 lost to St Pauls Green 7; Berwick Butterflies 0 lost to St Pauls Red 22; Berwick Brumbies 0 lost to St Pauls White 24.

Under 15: Berwick Blitzers, bye; Berwick Breakers 64 defeated St Marys 2.
