THE future of soccer in Cardinia Shire was given a strong kick forward last week when Cardinia Council approved a regional soccer strategy in conjunction with neighbouring Casey and Yarra Ranges councils.
Designed to examine the future direction of soccer in the region and to meet an increasing demand for facilities and clubs, the strategy has outlined short- and long-term plans across the shire.
Under the strategy, Casey Fields in Cranbourne has been touted as a regional venue to service Casey and parts of Cardinia Shire.
A similar facility is planned for the Yarra Ranges south-west region and including Cardinia Shire's hills suburbs.
Cardinia councillor Collin Ross said the strategy was on the right track to provide for future needs.
"We are perfectly positioned to take the lead role of the three councils."
Mayor Bill Pearson agreed, saying soccer would develop "faster than we think".
Cr George Blenkhorn said soccer was still an emerging sport in this part of the world. "We have to look long term."
Cr Brett Owen agreed. "We need to put this into perspective and not excite people too early.
"These developments are some time away yet, and
people have to wait because of the demands on the council."
Cardinia Shire has two soccer clubs. The Cardinia United Cougars junior soccer club is based in Pakenham and has more than 120 members.
There is also a 78-member club in Bunyip. Soccer in the City of Casey is more widespread, with 15 clubs. There are 11 clubs in the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
