Heart kick-starts school tournment

20 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
MELBOURNE Heart has confirmed it will play a large role in the annual Casey Cardinia interschools five-a-side soccer tournament at Lakeside Reserve, Pakenham, in March.

The A-League outfit will have a player in attendance to help present trophies and awards and put on a coaching clinic at the victorious school.

Organiser of the event, the still relatively new Cardinia United Junior Soccer Club, is putting it on free and has opened it to all primary schools in Casey and Cardinia municipalities with categories for boys, girls and mixed teams.

'The event is designed to assist the development of our great game throughout the area," tournament director Rob Hastings said. "Teachers, students and parents will all enjoy the occasion, which will be a day of non-stop action on nine small-sided pitches.

"The energy, enthusiasm and skill level is a real pleasure to watch."

More than 300 players from grades 5 and 6 will take part and all the officiating undertaken by diploma students from SEDA's (Sports Education and Development Australia) Melbourne Heart Academy program.

An award in the memory of the late Graeme Maggs - a popular, long-serving school principal and a member for 30 years of the Rotary Club of Narre Warren - will be presented to the boy and girl voted most valuable player in the tournament.

Enquiries for the tournament can be directed to Rob Hastings on 0400044257.
