THE Casey Comets retained the Cyril Payne Memorial trophy with an emphatic 4-2 win over Dandenong City on Saturday.
With Tony Saunders out due to a virus, Leigh Wilkinson took over as captain and despite the wet, muddy pitch conditions, it proved a competitive and exciting state league division 2 south-east fixture.
Brendan Elmazovski and Jarryd Barnes were prominent in the Comets' midfield in the opening 15-20 minutes. The first goal came at the 27th minute, set up by Barnes when he raced on to an Elmazovski through ball and his low fierce drive was side-footed past the Dandenong goalkeeper by Paul Presti from inside the six-yard box.
Just before half-time and with Dandenong gaining control, former Socceroo Anton Militic scored City's first goal and took the lead with a second goal soon after with a minute remaining in the first half.
After a half-time pep talk, it was the Comets who were in the attacking frame of mind and scored within five minutes.
Dandenong regrouped and went on the attack, but its forwards squandered several scoring opportunities. With 20 minutes remaining, Liam Ryan came off and was replaced by Stefan Ciccarelli.
With 10 minutes left, David Terek got the vital third goal for the Comets. Dean Ventieri came on for Paul Presti and from his efforts, Casey got its fourth goal to seal the result.
The reserves match was called off by officials after 20 minutes because of ground conditions.
