THE Casey Comets took advantage of injury-depleted Berwick City on Saturday to win 2-0 in the division 2 South Eastern League local derby.
There was some pre-match drama as the main pitch was deemed unplayable.
The match had to be played on Berwick's training park, which was quickly prepared. Casey coaches Doug Chisholm and George Hughes focused their players on the hunt for the finals.
The Comets started the game better and could have gone ahead early, but Brendan Elmazovski's goal-bound shot took a deflection and went for a corner.
The home team withstood the opening barrage and could consider itself unlucky not to have taken the lead from a free kick that struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced on the goal line and was picked up by Ashley Hupe in the Comets' goal.
Just before half-time, the Comets got the opening goal when a Jarryd Barnes cross found goal sneak Paul Presti, who coolly slotted it home despite protests from the home supporters that he was offside.
Elmazovski was the hero up forward when he finished up Presti's hard work for the Comet's second goal.
Next week the Comets travel away to play Morwell Pegasus.
