CASEY Comets' chances of taking the all-important second spot took a hit when they lost to Morwell 3-0 on Saturday.
The state league division 2 south-east game started well with the Comets maintaining possession but a controversial Morwell goal had the home side take the lead. Two minutes later, John Baros scored Morwell's second.
The Comets went on the offensive and came close on a number of occasions. Tony Saunders had a chance when he beat Michael Bonnefin to the ball, only to see his header loop just over the crossbar.
Morwell's midfield, led by ex-Cranbourne player Clayton Bell, was quick getting the ball forward into the wide zones, keeping the Comets defence stretched.
The Comets started poorly in the second half.
When the Comets' Anthony Ciccarelli attempted to clear a ball in the box he diverted it past Ashley Hupe and into his own net. Fine defensive work from Stefan Ciccarelli kept Morwell from blowing out its lead.
This week Casey is at home to the Doncaster Rovers. Despite being out of the running for the league, the Rovers will be hard to overcome in what will be a must-win game for the Comets.
The Comets will play Diamond Valley in the last game of the season.
