 Willing Wickers overpowered

Willing Wickers overpowered

13 Jul, 2009 02:20 PM
A SLOW start proved costly for Berwick's under-15 premier team in its Dandenong District Junior Football League round 9 match against Noble Park.

The Wickers were unable to match the opposition's early pressure and intensity and were soon on the backfoot, trailing by four goals at half time.

A far more committed Berwick appeared after the half-time interval and displayed the form it was capable of to reduce the margin to only one goal in the third term.

But it was of a case of having to play catch-up football as the Wickers were overrun in the last term, losing 12.8(80) to 15. 13(103). Hayden McLardy booted three goals, and Mitch Barnett and Jackson Parker kicked two each for the Wickers.

In the under 11s, Mitchel Dubbeld celebrated his 50th game with a hard-fought 11-point win against Noble Park.

The Wickers answered every challenge in a tough encounter to win 4.6(30) to 3.1(19), with three individual goalkickers. The club also farewelled Fletcher Cunningham, whose family is moving to Sydney.

Berwick proved too strong for Fountain Gate in under 10s, winning by 71 points, 11.13(79) to 1.2(8).

The Wickers shot to a 42-point lead by half-time, keeping the opposition scoreless. The team was led by Riley Lucas in a dominant performance.

Oscar Clavarino and Kyle Nunn were also solid. In defence, Scott Binder, Lochlan Banks-Faye and Hugh Ballingall restricted the opposition to just the one goal for the match.

* Congratulations to Riley Lucas and Oscar Clavarino on being selected in the Dandenong District Junior Football League interleague team earlier this month.

* Cameron Marshall celebrated his birthday with a great game in the ruck in the under-9s game against North Dandenong. Nathan Simons and Bailey Gimms had a memorable game, kicking their first goals.
