Wickers bow to Magpies

31 Aug, 2009 10:47 AM
Berwick's 2009 MPNFL Casey Cardinia finals experience was short-lived after Narre Warren knocked it out of the race on Saturday.

The Magpies practically ended the contest in the first term when they booted four goals to zip to open up a 23-point lead.

Narre Warren went into the game as raging hot favourite after comfortably beating the Wickers in two previous meetings this season.

In round 4 the Magpies won by 44 points and, just three weeks ago, it was the Pies again by 56 points.

The Wickers were a lot more competitive in this game, finally losing by 26 points, 11.11(77) to 6.15(51).

Eighteen-year-old Jackson Parker was a star for the Magpies, booting four goals in a best-on-ground display.

The 179cm teenager caused the Wickers all kinds of headaches.

Once again, the Magpies have been able to launch a major career in a final.

At the other end of the scale, former Richmond-listed player Brett Evans, at the ripe age of 37, booted two goals for the winners. Justin Marriott, just 17 years old, finished with two goals, as did Michael Collins.

Lee Boyle and Andrew Field were outstanding performers all afternoon for the Magpies and Ben Wragg was more than serviceable.

Berwick made one real charge at the Pies in the third quarter, booting three goals to one and reducing the margin to 18 points.

Paul Vanschilt and Jason Rahilly played outstanding footy for their team and Brett Robinson used his big frame to lead from the front.

Skipper Andrew Tuck also worked hard for the Wickers, while Brad Miles was his team's only multiple goalkicker with two.

In the reserves elimination final, Pakenham led all afternoon to end Devon Meadows' season, while in the under 18s, Devon Meadows had to fight off a Cranbourne team that came home strong, winning by 10 points.

Berwick beat Cranbourne by 41 points in the first semi-final of the colts, while Narre Warren went through to the colts grand final with a seven-point win over St John's.
