VFL: Fevola frenzy builds as Casey marches towards finals

30 Aug, 2011 12:00 AM
THE jungle drums for Brendan Fevola to return to the AFL are deafening after Saturday, with the former Coleman Medallist booting 10 majors as the Casey Scorpions smashed the Northern Bullants by 100 points at Casey Fields.

The Scorpions have now set up a bumper clash with ladder leader Port Melbourne in the opening week of the VFL finals with the match another opportunity for Fevola to showcase his renewed enthusiasm for the game.

Casey general manager Brian Woodman urged AFL clubs to take a second look at the former Carlton and Brisbane player.

"Fev continues to be the player that everyone expected him to be on the field," Woodman said.

"He has been outstanding over the last few weeks and has shown why he was a champion in the AFL.

"He has been a model for our club on and off the field and has gradually improved his fitness. Importantly, the whole season he has been a model to our young players.

"He supports them at training and off the field he spends a great deal of time with his charity work."

Fevola, 30, took Carlton and Bullants defender Michael Jamison to the cleaners in the opening half and finished it with four majors.

Fevola then towelled up Carlton-listed Paul Bower and Matthew Watson to finish the game with 17 possessions, 10 marks and 10 goals.

The Scorpions will also be buoyed by the senior return of Kyle Mathews after a serious head injury.

Mathews, who had been touted as a potential AFL recruit before he was assaulted at a Melbourne nightspot, booted five goals to also be among the Scorpions' best.

Woodman said it was a credit to Mathews that he had persevered with football and backed him to play a large role in the finals campaign.

Melbourne's Matthew Bate was also outstanding with 38 possessions.

Potential AFL recruit Tim Mohr was also key in the 28.12(180) to 11.14(80) victory, with his drive off half-back a highlight.

Kane Lucas and Brock McLean battled hard for the Bullants.

The Scorpions clash with Port Melbourne at TEAC Oval, Port Melbourne, on Saturday. The match will be televised live on the ABC.
