Top honours for three in league's centenary season

31 Mar, 2008 08:56 AM
THE MPNFL'S centenary season ambassador, No. 1 ticket holder, and patron highlight the "life link" the league has had with the community over 100 years.

Seaford and St Kilda star Robert Harvey was appointed ambassador; 1932 Rosebud premiership player and Australian Olympic identity Julias 'Judy' Patching, the No. 1 ticket holder; and charity worker and philanthropist Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, patron.

League chief executive officer Steve Pallas said they had given outstanding service to the community in their respective fields and reflected the role the competition had played in their lives, and the lives of so many other people.

"It shows the importance of the MPNFL to the community, and the importance of the people in the MPNFL to the community.

"There are hundreds of people who have been involved in the league over 100 years. There are many other people who have also become leaders in their fields and in the community.

"Local football breeds leaders. That's why it's important to highlight the link between the MPNFL and the community."

Pallas said the link between Dame Elisabeth Murdoch and the league was through her late husband, businessman and founder of the Murdoch media empire Sir Keith Murdoch.

"In 1932, her husband was secretary of the Langwarrin Football Club and he wrote a letter of resignation, which effectively says 'you must consider me the world's worst sports administrator, and must write me off as a complete failure.' The following year he was knighted by the Queen for his services to the Crown."

Interviews with Harvey and Patching, appear in the MPNFL centenary magazine published by Fairfax Community Network.

It can be purchased for $5 from MPNFL football and netball clubs and at Better Rentals depot at Pakenham or newsagents/general stores in Beaconsfield and Pakenham.
