Scorps cave in as Roosters seize initiative

31 Aug, 2010 12:00 AM
CASEY Scorpions were beaten by VFL powerhouse North Ballarat in Sunday's qualifying final and now face a cut-throat semi-final against Northern Bullants at TEAC Oval on Saturday.

The Roosters will now play in their fourth consecutive preliminary final thanks to their 32-point victory over the Scorpions.

When challenged, the Roosters lifted in the second and third quarters to put the match beyond doubt.

The Scorpions could have been beaten by more with the Roosters kicking just one goal in the opening quarter thanks to a stingy defence.

The 18.8(116) to 13.6(84) scoreline flattered the Scorpions with a number of their goals coming deep into junk time in the final term.

The Scorpions will now have to play a Bullants' side that was impressive in disposing of Collingwood on Saturday, with Andrew Walker and Brock McLean expected to come under consideration for a recall to the Carlton line-up.

Meanwhile, Scorpions general manager Brian Woodman has backed Brad Miller to continue his AFL career at another club.

Miller, 27, was told by Melbourne last week that he will not be offered a contract for next season after languishing in the second-tier competition with the Demons' VFL affiliate the Scorpions for most of this year.

Expansion team Gold Coast Suns are believed to be one of the clubs expressing interest.

"Brad is getting offers at the moment from AFL clubs, so we will let him go through that process himself," Woodman said.

"Brad has a young family, so he will make a decision that is best for his family. I feel, though, that Brad is a wonderful person and will succeed whatever his decision may be."

Miller made headlines last week with his decision to play for the Scorpions in Sunday's preliminary final instead of playing a farewell match with the Demons.

The strongly built key-position player has played 133 games for the Demons but has managed only six in 2010.

"Brad has been an outstanding team person for us this year, so his decision to play with us didn't surprise me," Woodman said.
