DEVON Meadows threw pundits a serious curve ball by upsetting Casey Cardinia ladder leader Cranbourne.
It seems the declaration of the final five last week in this column was a little premature.
But it was correctly tipped that Berwick would topple Tooradin to seal its finals place and Hampton Park would lose to Narre Warren in round 17.
Regardless of whether the Redbacks beat Pakenham this weekend, they still can't make the top five.
Devon Meadows' upset 11.12(78) to 6.16 (52) win over Cranbourne on Saturday means a victory over Beaconsfield in this week's final round would seal fifth position.
Cranbourne had its chances against the Panthers but was wasteful in front of goal in the opening quarter.
The Panthers took advantage of the opportunity and followed up with five goals to one behind in the second term. David Verlardo booted three goals and Daniel Rigg was the best player on the ground with two goals for the winners.
Ash Adams and Pat Harmes were solid contributors.
Justin Berry, Ryan Jones and Matt Rus were Cranbourne's best.
Narre Warren ended Hampton Park's hopes for the season, producing a special last quarter to run over the top of the Redbacks.
The Redbacks led by 21 points at three-quarter time but their season was snatched from them in the following 30 minutes when the Pies booted 6.5 to one behind to win, 13.12 (90) to 10.11 (71).
Berwick kicked seven goals to four behinds in the last quarter to beat Tooradin by 55 points.
While the Wickers dominated the second half - thanks to Tim Gunn in attack with five goals for the game and Nathan Waite with four - the Seagulls took it up to the visitors in the first half, largely due to Matt Davey in attack with five goals for the game.
Beaconsfield shored up a top-three spot with a 99-point win over ROC.
