Frosty appeal snowballs

21 Jan, 2008 02:04 PM
THE push to have legendary Dandenong VFA full-forward Jim 'Frosty' Miller inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame has become political.

Bill Sykes, the National MP for Benalla, who played in a premiership with Miller at Garfield before he became a legend at Dandenong, has joined our 'Fame for Frosty' campaign.

The National Party's spokesman for treasury, police and emergency services, manufacturing and exports, said Miller was a "hero" to him, and to hundreds of other people.

"Frosty was a typical, uncomplicated country boy, but on the footy field he was a colossus. He was a local hero at Garfield and became a cult hero with Dandenong.

"I'm a Garfield boy, and first played with Frosty in the under 16s. He was one of my football heroes as a youngster and he still is today.

"Dandenong provided the perfect opportunity for 'Frosty' ... a high standard of footy close to Garfield, and very strong, down-to-earth supporters.

"I marvelled at his achievements at Dandy, and he became a cult hero to the thousands of people who watched him play on television on Sundays."

Sykes, who played 54 games with Fitzroy in the VFL, said Frosty was also known, and recognised, by more famous footballers and celebrities like Rex Hunt.

"I was driving through the Melbourne CBD one Sunday and I was sprung by a policeman for doing an illegal left-hand turn.

"I showed him my licence and he said `You're from Garfield, Frosty Miller country.' I said that I'd played in a premiership with him last year [1966].

"The cop turned out to be Rex Hunt, and let me off."

There are various stories about how the name Frosty came about but Sykes, who grew up in Garfield, subscribes to the best known one: that, as a boy, Miller ran around barefoot in the frost in winter.

Sykes, who won the the byelection after the retirement of sitting National's MP Pat McNamara five years ago, said Miller would make a "worthy inductee" into the Hall of Fame.

Final submissions for our 'Fame For Frosty' campaign close on Thursday, January 31, and can be posted to the Journal, PO Box 318, Dandenong 3175, or emailed to phillip.mcleod
