CASEY Scorpions escaped with the four points against the Gold Coast on the back of a 10-goal haul by Melbourne's Brad Miller at Casey Fields on Saturday.
The Scorpions trailed by 44 points and the Gold Coast looked to be heading for its first win in the Victorian Football League before Miller virtually won the game off his own boot, 18.11(119) to 17.13(115).
The win ensured a home final for the Scorpions.
The youthful Suns got the jump on the Scorpions in the first quarter, having 10 scoring shots to three, and their inaccuracy kept the home side in the game.
Despite Casey kicking four goals in the second quarter, the Gold Coast slammed on nine goals to take a commanding lead into the main break.
After some structural changes, the Scorpions started winning more of the ball through Miller, who kicked six of their seven goals for the quarter.
Miller was unstoppable and forced Suns coach Guy McKenna to move star recruit Karmichael Hunt onto him.
At the start of the final term, Casey trailed by just two points, but the plucky Suns continued to apply scoreboard pressure.
It took a 55-metre bomb from out-of-favour Melbourne player Matthew Bate to finally allow the Scorpions to wrest the lead from Gold Coast.
In the final minutes Casey put numbers behind the ball and was resolute in defence.
Miller was the most influential player along with Melbourne teammates Matthew Warnock and Kyle Cheney.
Ben Macreadie's stocks continue to rise with another impressive performance in the midfield.
