THE Journal's campaign to have former Dandenong and Berwick legend Jim 'Frosty' Miller inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame has kicked another goal, with the City of Greater Dandenong coming out in support.
Mayor Youhorn Chea said Miller deserved the honour because of the contribution he has made to football and the "social fabric" of the community.
"The City of Greater Dandenong is extremely proud of Jim 'Frosty' Miller, and he deserves a place among the elite ranks of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
"His contribition to local football and the social fabric of Dandenong is beyond measure. He was a working-class hero and provided hope and inspiration during some very tough times."
Cr Chea said that while his own football knowledge was limited, he had been told of Miller's exploits and of the player's almost mythical standing in the community since his time on the council.
"So many people have told me about 'Frosty'. It's amazing to hear that the people who would come to watch him were often five deep around the fence. I'm told he always made time to talk to, or have a drink with, supporters after the game.
"His exploits attracted a lot of media attention for the region during his career. I believe it's time that his services to Australian Rules Football and the community should be recognised at the highest [level]."
In 2006, Miller was named among the City of Greater Dandenong's 14 greatest sports heroes in the council's Sporting Heroes project that coincided with the Mebourne Commonwealth Games.
Miller won the VFA/VFL's leading goalkicker award a record six times, booting 885 goals from 183 games at an average 4.8 goals per game.
He topped the VFA goalkicking six out of seven times between 1968 and '74, kicking 106 goals in 1969, and 108 goals in 1973.
He was also a member of Dandenong's 1971 premiership team and its team of the century.
Miller's legendary status was recognised when the VFA/VFL named its goalkicking award after him and made him a life member.
All submissions in the Journal's 'Fame for Frosty' campaign will be forwarded to the Australian Hall of Fame selection committee in January, for a decision to be made in February.
Anyone wanting to make a submission on behalf of Miller can post it to the Journal, PO Box 318, Dandenong 3175, or email to philip.mcleod@fairfax.com.au - headed 'Fame for Frosty' campaign.
