 Wickers defeat North Dandenong

Wickers defeat North Dandenong

25 Mar, 2008 10:12 AM
BERWICK has claimed its second turf 1 premiership in three seasons after defeating North Dandenong in a hard fought turf 1 grand final.

Defending an imposing 289 in oppressive conditions, the Wickers toiled for 82.3 overs against the big hearted Northerners in what was an absorbing contest.

North started well through openers Glenn Finkelde (23) and David Bell (43), and was able to build partnerships around number three batsman Shane Leonard through the innings. Leonard top scored with 77, but his anchoring role was not enough as the Wickers were able to restrict North from the other end.

With captain and strike bowler Alex Roberts unable to bowl due to a hamstring strain he suffered in the semi final, former Dandenong Panther James Prendergast, was unstoppable with 3-40 .

He received solid support from fellow opener Cam Henry (2-43) and the choking leg spin of Ash Henry (2-78 off 20 over).

The win was set up on day one by a fighting 93 from Paul Evans and he was recognised with the Damien Fleming Medal for best player in the turf1 grand final.

Bell was the standout bowler for North Dandenong, sending down 19 overs and picking up 3-44.

Englishman Roberts said the club had "unfinished business" after last year's loss to Springvale South.

"We had some unfinished business after finishing on top last year.

"We were the best side on paper, but we didn't perform when we needed to. The celebrations have been huge. I didn't realise how much it meant to a lot of people in and around the club."

President Rodney Allan said the club was in "celebration mode".
