RAIN that seeped through a nick in the covers caused the second day's play in Berwick's turf 1 match against Mordialloc to be abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The game was at an enthralling stage with the opposition chasing Berwick's mediocre total and with several of their batsmen already back in the shed. The draw kept Berwick's unbeaten record intact.
Turf 2 had already lost against Dandenong West on the first innings and was expecting to be put back in. Instead, they spent day two out on the field after the opposition decided to have some batting practice and posted a massive 501 for the loss of seven wickets.
Carl Sutton toiled hard for 1-72 off 25 overs, as did opening bowler Aaron Barnard with 2-55, but it was an uphill battle against a much more experienced line up. Keeper Keagan Driscoll continues to impress.
A grade was 1-13 chasing 176 and hopeful of chalking up its first win of the season.
However, at 5-62 things were looking grim. Tom Waters and Marty McGauran set about getting the innings back on track with a 48-run sixth-wicket stand. Waters posted his half century and McGauran scored a patient 32 before running out of partners 40 runs shy of victory.
B grade made an early breakthrough defending 233 against Springvale South but was batted out of the game.
Andrew Taylor was the pick of the bowlers with 3-46.
The game slipped away from E grade after the Bears failed to chase down Springvale South's 269. Resuming at 0-28, the Eagles were soon in trouble at 4-87. Fraser Hopgood made a gritty 57, Andrew Young's 63 provided a glimmer of hope, and JayYoung, Ray Henry, and Grant Robinson all got starts, but the chance of victory was lost and Berwick was dismissed for 244.
