CASEY-South Melbourne has almost certainly squandered a golden opportunity to entrench itself in the Premier Cricket top eight in its clash against Fitzroy-Doncaster at Schramms Reserve.
The Lions require another 43 runs with seven wickets in hand to defeat the Swans after bowling the visitors out for 158.
The Swans batted first, and after a delayed start to the day because of a wet ground, they were soon in trouble at 2-8.
Shaun Foster (1) and Jayde Herrick (12) fell soon after and the Swans were struggling at 5-58 but it was again the heroics of Clive Rose (70 not out) that saved the day for the Swans.
The Swans were eventually dismissed for 158 with Roshan Livera (39) the other player to offer some resistance against the onslaught led by Peter Dickson, who snared 3-28.
In reply, the Lions are 3-115 with Matt Bremner (68) blasting a half-century at the top of the order while Dickson (36) was the other major contributor.
Victorian and Swans paceman Herrick has claimed two of the scalps.
Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne is well on top in the seconds clash against Fitzroy-Doncaster at Casey Fields on Saturday.
The Swans dismissed the Lions for 150 with Rod Bird claiming 3-20 to push his case for a senior recall. In reply the Swans are 2-61 with Dimitri Deane (25 not out) poised to make a big score.
Fitzroy-Doncaster blasted 8-302 in the thirds clash against Casey-South Melbourne, with Peter Cashen blasting 119.
In the fourths Casey-South Melbourne is chasing 214 for victory in its clash against Fitzroy-Doncaster on Saturday.
