CASEY-South Melbourne recorded its best win of the Premier Cricket season with a stunning turnaround against Dandenong at Casey Fields on Saturday.
Swans coach Mark Ridgway said their successful run chase, after slumping to 7-122 chasing the Panthers' 254, was "probably as good a day of cricket as I've seen in my four years at Casey".
It was a pair of unheralded batsmen that turned it around for the Swans. Veteran Shane Maggs (86 not out) recorded his first half-century for the club. He combined with Nathan Hibbins (55 not out) for a 133-run partnership to help the Swans to 7-255.
"Maggs and Hibbins were outstanding - they didn't panic, they used good common sense, hit the bad ball and kept the good balls out," Ridgway said.
"Dandenong are a very good side."
Hibbins, who is expected to play a lot of cricket for the Swans - with wicketkeeper Matthew Wade now expected to figure prominently in the Australian side - is the son of club president Ross Hibbins.
Ridgway said the hard work from Hibbins had made him a serviceable Premier Cricket player, making a handy 43 not out against Camberwell before Christmas.
"It was outstanding," he said. "He's been the second-grade keeper for a long time and we've given him some opportunity with Matty Wade not there. He trains really hard and doesn't make too many mistakes when he is keeping - he's done really well."
The Swans were in trouble when Panthers' pacemen Justin Butterfield, Matt Willcocks and Brent Fairbanks all snared two early wickets.
But steadying knocks from opening batsman Rohan Blandford (37), Clive Rose (20) and Dimitri Deane (26) ensured even more wasn't required of Maggs and Hibbins.
