 Opener on a rampage

Opener on a rampage

19 Jan, 2009 10:19 AM
BUCKLEY Ridges' Daniel 'DJ' Watson is a contender for the world's highest Twenty20 score after smashing an unbeaten 193 off 69 balls last Tuesday night.

Opening the batting, Watson slogged 15 fours and 16 sixes with the ball ending up in the yards of houses across the road from Nelson Reserve in Harold Road, Springvale South.

Buckley scored a mammoth 4-269 against Springvale South, which replied with a gallant 9-199 in the Dandenong District Cricket Association's Sandown Sixes competition semi-final.

Watson, 20, whose highest score this season was 49, said he got into a "rhythm" after having a look for the first two overs.

"I like to play my shots but I've never played them like that before. I got into a rhythm and everything started coming out of the middle.

"The bowlers have to come off short runs in Twenty20 and try to bowl it full, so you can work out where you are going to hit out before they bowl.

"They pretty well bowled in my hitting zone, which was straight, and over the bowler's head."

Watson, who also captains the Dandenong District Cricket Association's under-21 side, said he was too "knackered" to get the 10 runs off the last four balls for an unbelievable double hundred.

"When I got to 150, there was about four overs left and thought if I could get enough of the strike I might have chance [of making 200] but I was pretty knackered by then.

"One of my mates came into bat and I thought I'd give him the strike because I didn't know how many [runs] I was on."

Watson said he didn't compare his career-best innings to that of new Australian Twenty20 wonder boy David Warner.

"I've got my own technique. It's not the best technique, but it suits me. I liked the way Adam Gilchrist batted because of his ability to hit a long ball.

"Helpfully, it [his 193no] has got me into a bit of form for the rest of the season."

Buckley president Chris Rattle said Watson's score would be close to a world record and wanted it ratified. "193 not out must be right up there. I've trawled the internet to see if it's a world record and haven't been able to find anything that compares with it."
