DDCA: Wickers out for payback

31 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
BERWICK skipper James Davies is not expecting the Dandenong and District Cricket Association Twenty20 final to be a pushover, despite the opposition coming from a second-tier competition.

Davies, who took over as Twenty20 captain from Jarrod Goodes this year, said the Wickers were focused on making amends for last summer's loss in the final to Buckley Ridges.

But standing in their way is well-drilled Turf 2 team Coomoora, which ended Buckley Ridges' dominance of the Twenty20 competition in the semi-finals.

"We don't know a lot [about them] to be honest," Davies said.

"I'm pretty sure they've got a good young team and they are well led by Rob Johnston.

"If they've got the team to beat Buckley Ridges they must be pretty good."

The Wickers are set to be boosted by the inclusion of James Wilcock, who returns from Premier Cricket duties with the Dandenong Panthers.

"Everyone is available to play and we'll have James Wilcock as well," Davies said.

"He's a good player and has played a fair bit of district cricket."

Davies, who is in his fifth season at Berwick, said his team had set itself

the goal of winning the Twenty20

competition prior to the season.

"Obviously we got to the final last year and got beaten by Buckley Ridges," he said.

"We'll get into the regionals if we win it and have the opportunity to play against teams from other competitions, which is always good.'

In good news for Berwick, Davies, an Englishman, is almost certain to return to Australia for another season.

Coomoora president Steve Johnston said his players were raring to go against the Wickers.

"Not many people would have thought we would get there," he said.

"We are a young club, all our players are 24 or younger and all of a sudden they have put it together.

"We are so proud of them."

The Roos are led by captain Paul Hill and rising star Rob Johnston while several other promising talents also feature in their ranks.

"The boys took a lot of confidence from beating Buckley Ridges, they are the yardstick," Johnston said.

The winner will take away prize money of $600 while the runner-up will receive $400. A premiership cup will also be presented to the winner on the night.
