CASEY-South Melbourne ace Clive Rose made his Victorian debut on Saturday, nearly helping the Bushrangers steal a victory over South Australia.
The Bushrangers brought in three first-gamers - including Rose - for the clash against ladder-leader South Australia in the one-day cricket competition.
Rose bowled 12 overs in the Redbacks' innings of 7-277, finishing with the match figures of 0-53 in a promising display with his left-arm spinners.
The talented Narre Warren all-rounder then made 23 not out, combining for a ninth-wicket stand of 40 with Frankston ace Scott Boland (19) to give the Bushrangers a faint sniff.
But the Bushrangers were dismissed for 229 in 44.2 overs with Aaron Finch top-scoring with 63.
Casey-South Melbourne captain Jake Best said Rose had shown that he belongs at state level during his promising display.
"He bowled really well and then made 23 there at the end," he said.
A fortnight ago, Rose was among the Victorian 2nd XI's best in their victory over Sri Lanka that caught the selectors' eyes.
