BERWICK sits on top of the Dandenong District Cricket Association turf1 ladder after an emphatic seven-wicket win against arch-rival Springvale South.
The win was set up by an 83-run opening partnership by youngsters Rowan Purkiss and Josh Holden, who withstood a fiery opening spell from former Berwick player and English import Alex Roberts.
Purkiss was out for a season-high 40 and Holden saw the score pass 100 and consolidated his team's position until he dismissed for a well-compiled 60.
Brad Francis showed why he is considered one of the competition's elite batsman with a crowd-pleasing half century. Skipper Paul Evans chipped in with 18.
Gavan Wills was unbeaten on 18 when Berwick passed the opposition's total, taking great delight in restricting the opposition to 1-57 off 17.1 overs.
Chasing Springvale South's formidable total of 300, Berwick turf2 started promisingly before Brad James was out for 18 with 35 runs on the board. Rob Witt did most of the scoring with his first 50 of the season, including nine boundaries.
When Witt was out for 58, the chase came to a screaming halt after three wickets were lost for just 12 with the score at 5-106. The team was eventually all out for 156 in 60 overs on a flat, one-paced home wicket.
Defending 178 and with two Keysborough batsmen already back in the shed, Agrade had high hopes of picking up its first points of the season. Rod Mead made his presence felt in his first game with the club, taking five weeks in a fiery opening spell.
Tom Gillies and Michael Dalzotto took a wicket each to help bowl out an undermanned opposition for 56. Berwick enforced the follow-on with 55 overs remaining. Mead was again the bogeyman taking 3-29.
Stephen Tolley took 2-10 to shoot out the opposition for 132. Berwick scored the required 23 runs to secure outright points.
