THERE'S every chance the Dandenong Rangers will combine this week's road trip to Brisbane Spartans with the team's end-of-season get-together.
Their South East Australian Basketball League season will come to a close after the match against the Spartans.
In a season of fluctuating fortunes, the Rangers witnessed the gap between the better teams on the weekend when they lost to both Geelong and Kilsyth.
On the road for both contests, the Rangers forced the Supercats into overtime in an exciting clash, but with Geelong's Nathan Herbert (37 points) unstoppable, the Rangers came up short 103-92.
Best for Dandenong were Luke Fitzgerald (25 points, 20 rebounds) and Jon Shepherd (13 points).
Saturday's game at Kilsyth wasn't as close. In fact, a 31-14 opening quarter by the Cobras effectively ended the contest after 10 minutes.
Despite a better effort in the third quarter when the Rangers outscored the top-of-the-ladder Cobras 22-15, the result was always safe with the home team and the 95-78 win was indicative of where both teams are now placed.
Once again Fitzgerald led the way for the Rangers with 17 points. Brent Hobba stepped up with 16.
Meanwhile, the Dandenong ladies lost top spot on Saturday night after losing to Kilsyth, 80-68.
The loss was unexpected, though the Cobras do appear capable of more upsets come finals time, especially given the form of Deanna Smith.
Smith dominated against the Rangers, finishing with 26 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists. The best for a disappointing Dandenong was Kathleen Macleod with 19 points and stalwart Larissa Anderson with 15. The women were scheduled to play Albury-Wodonga yesterday.
