THANKS to some smart thinking, 12 Beaconhills Christian College students will be jetting to the US for an international battle of the minds.
Three student groups from the college's Berwick campus won their way to the world titles after being placed in the top two in their divisions at Future Problem Solving national finals at the Gold Coast this month.
Another three Beaconhills crews were placed third in their divisions.
The stand-out result was from four year 7 students, who put their minds to ensuring the survival of Victoria's Leadbeater's possum.
The group, titled HELP (Helping the Endangered Leadbeater's Possum), fund-raised and sponsored nesting boxes for the possums.
Their efforts won the national middle school title for community problem solving, with rarely-awarded "beyonder points" for surpassing the judge's expectations.
Carmel Byrne, the middle school specialist learning co-ordinator, said the group showed great creativity, selling wristbands and holding a colouring competition to raise money for the project.
"I guess it's been a chance for bright kids to shine. They are often reluctant to stand out.
"It's a testament to all six groups' efforts. They're really, really proud of themselves."
The other successful teams were KEY Foods (Kids Eat Yummy Foods), three year 7s who decided to make healthy food that was attractive to young palates and fortnightly promote their recipes outside a Berwick supermarket, and IC:UC (Indigenous Culture Unites Casey), which planted an indigenous plants garden at Wilson Botanical Park.
The next fund-raising effort will be for a uniform, air fares and accommodation in Wisconsin for the world titles.
