A PROPOSED five-storey retail, hotel and office development planned for Berwick Village is "not in keeping with the village's character, and has slipped under everyone's radar," says a Berwick resident.
The resident, who did not want to be named, said Casey Council had given no time for residents to object to the development proposed for Lyall Road, opposite the Berwick Inn.
The development would include a supermarket, 12 speciality shops, and 374 car parking spaces.
"Objections close on May 26 - why is it that residents don't ever know anything about these types of plans until it's almost too late?
"We don't need another supermarket in the village, we don't need more shops, we don't need a five-storey modern development and more traffic congestion."
Berwick Chamber of Commerce vice-president Annette Aldersea, who owns Berwick Curtain Nook, said three stories should be the maximum height for any building in Berwick.
"This proposal would be opposite the Berwick Inn and would be far taller - it would be out of place."
Mr Hutchinson said the chamber was organising a community meeting to be announced soon.
Casey manager planning Duncan Turner said the proposal was advertised for public comment through a direct mail-out on May 6 to 321 owners and occupiers surrounding the site, signs on site and two notices in a local newspaper.
