THE voice of the people will decide if a new Vietnam Veterans Association venue will be built in Pakenham.
Members of the VVA West Gippsland branch have called a public meeting for March 24 to gauge public interest in a "club-type venue".
VVA vice president Ray Caldwell said the group had been given the go-ahead to explore the possibilities of creating a venue in town and it could be modelled on the success of many RSL club venues across the state.
"First we have to identify if there is a demand, then we can develop a model, and third we can look at a location.
"Maybe there is no demand for such a facility - it may turn out it is just not needed or wanted in the area."
Mr Caldwell did not dismiss the possibility of the venue being modelled on facilities such as Dandenong's RSL club, which has a member's club, family bistro, public bar and gaming lounge.
"We thought we would put it to an open forum for people to come down and see what we are thinking about doing.
"At this stage it is purely and simply a Vietnam Veterans issue.
"We envisage that the facility could include other services clubs in the area such as the CFA or the police, but it is all just in the feasibility stage."
The meeting is on from 7pm, March 24, at the Pakenham RSL. Details: 0418121358.
