POLICE believe sparks from a power tool ignited the Narre Warren North fire that destroyed three houses last Saturday week.

More than 500 firefighters battled to contain the 175-hectare blaze, which the CFA feared could travel to Upper Beaconsfield had it not been stopped at Harkaway Road.

A Kilsyth tradesman, 40, was charged last Monday with breaching the conditions of a total fire-ban day and conduct endangering life.

If convicted, he faces a maximum fine of $10,000, two years' imprisonment or both.

The incident prompted police to warn Victorians against using tools and barbecues on total fire-ban days.
