Thieves leave pets to die

26 Nov, 2007 09:44 AM
THE Berwick Church of Christ's counselling centre has suffered a setback after "callous" thieves stole a computer and left a pet goldfish to die.

Between 5pm on November 14 and 9am the next day, offenders broke into the church in Centre Road and stole a hard drive from the Living Springs counselling centre. The thieves also removed a goldfish from its tank and left it to die outside.

BCOC senior pastor Barry Cutchie said it showed the offenders had a "callous streak".

"This act is very disappointing. It's a major inconvenience to our counselling centre that is there to serve people in the community who need support and encouragement most."

He said the service, which provides relationship, grief, trauma and emotional stress counselling, would continue.

Mr Cutchie said the church was regularly subject to vandalism attacks.

"We continue to experience vandalism. Our windows are smashed on a regular basis. We've got a large property and people come into the car park and do burn-outs and doughnuts.

"It's sad that these people target organisations like a church."

Information to Narre Warren criminal investigations unit on 9705 3138 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
