A BEACONSFIELD community group has spearheaded a plan for residents to save money on energy bills and is encouraging Casey and Cardinia Shire households and businesses to join.
The Beaconsfield Progress Association has developed a 'power in numbers' bid to get electricity and gas discounts through a bulk-buying agreement.
BPA has joined a community group buying scheme with energy retailer AGL and its subsidiary Powerdirect - and
more than 1000 households have already joined.
Last week, a website promoting the scheme stated that residents could save 15 per cent on electricity and 10 per cent on gas.
BPA spokesman Angelo D'Amelio said the bulk-buying agreement was developed to suit every household and sign-up numbers had exceeded expectations of about 300 people when first touted last August.
"It's going tremendously, and it's the first to achieve the backing of a whole shire.
"The deal is up and running and people can sign up now," Mr D'Amelio said.
Information sessions are at Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham this weekend from 9am-4pm.
"People can call 1300767949 and quote BPA Power Group Deal to discuss the scheme, sign up over the phone or online," Mr D'Amelio said.
Cardinia Shire mayor Ed Chatwin said the council supported the scheme.
"Hopefully the result will be very positive for residents of Cardinia Shire."
