Teens to face court over park graffiti

07 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
EIGHT teenagers have been charged over a rash of graffiti at a Narre Warren park in the past two weeks.

The teenagers, aged between 14 and 19, were charged with graffiti-related offences in and around the pavilion in Sweeney Reserve.

Acting Sergeant Paul Stow of the Narre Warren police said there had been a large increase in graffiti in the area and police worked with Casey council's graffiti management program to gather intelligence and identify offenders.

It cost about $20,000 to remove graffiti from the pavilion.

"The nature of the graffiti experienced in the area has a follow-on effect to the wider community in that it impacts on the perception of public safety and costs the council time, money and effort to eradicate from council assets," Sergeant Stow said.

The teenagers - all from Berwick, Narre Warren or Cranbourne - have been bailed to appear at the Dandenong Children's Court later this month or the Dandenong Magistrates Court in April.

Sergeant Stow said police had got on top of the graffiti problem but more work needed to be done.

"We encourage the ongoing support of the community in contacting the police and the council."

Casey Council aims to remove graffiti within one working day from all council assets and any private properties that qualify for graffiti-removal.

Marking graffiti on private property without an owner's consent can attract up to two years in prison and a fine of as much as $28,000. Just being found with spray paint - if it's proved to be intended for graffiti-making - can attract fines of $2921.

Graffiti can be reported to the council's graffiti removal contractor by phoning 1800 VANDAL (1800826325) or emailing casey@ums.com.au.
