MAKE it a smoke-free Sunday- that's the message from Cardinia Shire Council as part of its new open-air burning policy.
Cr Ed Chatwin said the policy considered the two sides to the issue, providing clarity as to where and when burning off was permitted.
Under the policy, no burning is permitted on a Sunday except for agricultural requirements.
"Open-air burning can be an effective way to remove fine fuel for summer fires, particularly in fire-prone areas of the shire," Cr Chatwin said.
"But we are also mindful that smoke from open-air burning can have a major impact on neighbours."
Emerald Village Committee president Lee Fuller supported the initiative and encouraged residents to consider alternatives to burning off.
The policy divides the shire into three zones with separate guidelines.
