CARDINIA kindergartens at risk of closure due to lack of funding have welcomed a State Government reprieve to restore rural subsidies.
Cardinia Council said the Kinders Together Association, parents and the community worked hard on a successful campaign to reinstate the funding for Lang Lang and Koo Wee Rup kindergartens.
General manager community wellbeing Fiona Hodges said council would continue to partner the government and the community to ensure rural subsidies were maintained.
"Local community-based kindergartens are an important asset in small rural communities as they bring the community together and support the development of children," said Mrs Hodges.
Eastern Victoria region member Edward O'Donohue welcomed the "backflip".
"It is shameful that these communities have had to fight for funding to be recognised as `rural' kindergartens when it is painfully clear that both Lang Lang and Koo Wee Rup are rural townships."
He congratulated the association, particularly president Kylie Epskamp, parents and the community, as well as Cardinia councillor Doug Hamilton who fought hard to stop funding cuts to the rural towns.
"This campaign was hard fought over a number of months and has caused unnecessary angst among parents and the local communities of Lang Lang and Koo Wee Rup," he said.
