COMPLAINTS about the misuse of spaces for disabled parking in Cardinia Shire has led to Cardinia councillor Collin Ross calling for an investigation into the number of parking officers in the shire.
At a council meeting last Monday, Cr Ross gave notice that he would move a motion asking the council to conduct the investigation that would also deal with the abuse of short-term parking.
He said the council should consider providing a temporary parking officer, or officers, on a six-month trial to focus on disabled and limited-time parking.
"It's sad that some people think is is their right to park in a one-hour car park for six hours,
or that people won't move from a disabled car parking space," Cr Ross said.
Cr Brett Owen, while agreeing the investigation was "worthwhile", questioned the policing of disabled and timed parking in the shire.
Council corporate services general manager Neil Thorpe would not give details of the timetable for parking patrols for fear that motorists would use the information to avoid detection.
The council voted to consider the motion at its October 19 meeting.
