DRIVERS ignoring safety laws on Pakenham roads have been warned they will be caught when Operation Thunderbolt takes place.
Police pursuit cars and cameras will be waiting to nab drivers speeding through the town after dark. This will follow a booze bus operation last Wednesday when Pakenham police caught "too many" drivers under the influence of alcohol.
Sergeant Nigel Atkins of the Pakenham police said the booze bus on the Princes Highway on August 19 caught one in 60 motorists drink-driving. "Drivers caught ranged from mid-20s to late 40s.
"Three were charged with exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit, or being over .05. All were Pakenham residents.
"We also caught a few speeding. It's appalling. Pakenham isn't getting the message. It's a pretty poor effort on part of the community because there are still a lot of people speeding."
Sergeant Atkins said that since the start of the year 197 people had lost their licences for speeding.
Last Saturday week, a 39-year-old Narre Warren man was caught speeding at 100kmh in a 70 zone.
Operation Thunderbolt will be conducted in the next few days.
"The operation will be executed shortly," Sergeant Atkins said. "I'm not going to say when it happens but it will be after dark and in the early hours of the morning, when there will be a number of pursuit vehicles and speed cameras operating."
