Site proposal spurs rates call

A plan to redevelop the Casey civic centre at a rumoured cost of more than $40 to ratepayers has prompted a push to tie Casey Council's rate rises to the consumer price index.

Last week, Casey Council revealed it wanted to pull down the Narre Warren Civic Centre and redevelop the site into a $300 million shopping and community precinct.

The proposed complex would include a library, arts centre and council buildings .

The project would be governed by a five-year development lease that will be superseded by a 50-year ground lease on completion of the development.

Although originally thought to be cost-neutral, it was last week reported that the project could to cost ratepayers more than $40 million.

But Casey councillor Michael Farley will move a motion at Tuesday's meeting to cap rate rises to the consumer price index to stop rate hikes from spiralling.

Cr Farley said his motion was prompted by a resident's letter appealing for the council to "have compassion".

"We have residents out there who are suffering and can't pay their mortgages, and as a governing body we have to act responsibly and consider our ratepayers," he said.

Cr Farley said he believed too many expensive projects were not in the best interests of ratepayers at a time of high inflation and interest rates.
