MELBOURNE Football Club's temporary relocation to Casey Fields looks to be a done deal.
Officials from the City of Casey, MFC, the AFL and Casey Scorpions met last Thursday and it appears an agreement has been reached.
A leaked memo from chief executive officer Mike Tyler, seen by the Journal anticipated that councillors would make a decision at an August 5 meeting.
This would suggest that final rubber-stamping was required from councillors and the club's board before Melbourne based itself at Casey for all of season 2009.
The area would be used as a pre-season home after the club moves to the new rectangular stadium near the MCG in 2010.
The council has set aside $890,000 for refurbishing the stadium and car parking at the Cranbourne East sporting complex to meet AFL standards.
It is believed the AFL is set to chip in with $350,000 for the project and the council would give the Demons a plot of land, valued at around $500,000-600,000, to be used however the club wishes.
Mayfield Ward councillor Steve Beardon said he was not aware of any "land giveaway'' and would not support a plan that did not benefit residents.
"I won't be giving away any land, that's for sure,'' Cr Beardon said.
"There would need to be a benefit back to community.
"Nothing's been put on the table on any land being given away. It would need to be leased and money returned to the community in some way.''
Fellow ward councillor Kevin Bradford accused the CEO of not being "honest and open'' about the deal.
Neither the Melbourne or Scorpion officials returned the Journal's calls by deadline.
