Shire steers plan to help weary drivers

26 Oct, 2009 08:36 AM
CARDINIA Shire council has met the developers of twin service stations being built in Officer in a bid to establish driver-reviver rest stops at the sites.

The two service stations, constructed on the eastern and western sides of the Pakenham Bypass, are expected to be completed early next year.

Cr Brett Owen, a member of the Road Safety Outer South East group, said the meeting aimed to restart the Driver Reviver program in Cardinia Shire.

The community-run sites are aimed at reducing the road toll by encouraging motorists to stop for a rest and complimentary refreshments.

"These sites encourage people to beat fatigue while travelling," Cr Owen said.

He said the council, together with the Pakenham SES, would apply for a grant from the Transport Accident Commission for a driver-reviver caravan.

Cr Owen hopes the program will be in place in time for the busy Easter holiday period next year.
