PRODUCE from Victoria's asparagus heartland will be showcased at the Cardinia Shire asparagus harvest celebration at Pakenham Racecourse next month.
The annual spring event headlines the Cardinia Ranges Farmer's Market and features growers from Dalmore, Koo Wee Rup, Bayles and farmland in the heart of the shire's asparagus country.
Second-generation organic asparagus farmers Trevor and Joanne Courtney from Bridge Farm will be bringing their top-quality accredited asparagus to the market.
For John Hanen from Hanens Asparagus in Bayles, the market is an ideal way to promote his business.
"Farmers have just started hand-cutting snap fresh asparagus shoots, destined for local and export markets - and we'll be picking asparagus around the clock in October."
Mr Hanen said this season's asparagus is top quality and perfect for the barbecue. "So if you love asparagus, you won't be disappointed."
October's market will be buzzing with activities for the whole family including the Asparagus Council's cooking demonstrations, Little Cooks in the Kitchen classes for children and asparagus-themed races.
New season produce including free range eggs, farmhouse cheeses, award-winning wines, olive oils and freshly baked bread will also be available. A gold coin entry fee will support a fund-raising program for the Toomuc Valley CFA.
Cardinia Ranges farmer's market is on 8am to noon, Saturday, October 10, at the Pakenham racecourse, Racecourse Road, Pakenham.
