Road plea is answered

28 Sep, 2009 09:54 AM
LESS than a week after Gembrook state MP Tammy Lobato made a plea for funds to upgrade Beaconsfield-Emerald Road, the State Government has announced $5.2 million towards the project.

Roads Minister Tim Pallas visited the site with Ms Lobato last Wednesday to announce the funding.

"We understand how important these safety benefits are for local communities," Mr Pallas said.

"Roads are an important part of Victoria's economic and social development - connecting our towns and suburbs, ensuring efficient freight movement and creating jobs."

In the five years to June 2008, there were 56 casualty crashes, including six fatalities, between Princes Highway East in Beaconsfield and north of Station Avenue, Emerald. About 78 per cent of those were run-off-the-road crashes.

Safety measures will include skid-resistant surfacing, shoulder sealing, guard rail and wire rope safety barriers, extra guide posts, high intensity line-marking and raised reflective pavement markers.
