A DOG poo collection trial by Casey Council will be abandoned after research showed the council was barking up the wrong tree.
Under the $7500 trial, two extra litter bins and a biodegradable bag dispenser unit were installed in three parks: Minihans Reserve, Cranbourne, Ray Bastin Reserve, Narre Warren, and the Sydney Pargeter Reserve, Endeavour Hills.
Residents were sent letters encouraging them to use the new additions.
"Overall, the observational results have not supported an expansion of this trial project," stated a report by council officers circulated at a recent council meeting.
"There was no apparent decrease in the amount of dog faeces observed at the parks prior to and during the trial."
At Minihans Reserve, bags were often vandalised and left as litter and more domestic waste ended up in the bins than canine calling-cards.
Although the experiment was more successful at the Ray Bastin Reserve, bags were not used frequently at the Sydney Pargeter Reserve.
The report, adopted by councillors, advised considering putting $50,000 aside in the next budget to distribute a pack of 10 dogwaste bags to owners of the 25,000 dogs registered in the municipality.
"The costs are high, but lower than servicing dog litter bins in parks," the document said.
Pet owners are already required to clean up after their dogs and Casey's local law team is investigating also requiring owners to carry an "appropriate bag or device" from February 1 next year.
