WOMEN aged 15 to 80 can improve their personal security with free self-defence classes next month.
"Self-defence is especially relevant with Christmas around the corner and perpetrators aware that women are flustered and distracted and may be carrying more money," organiser Tricia Clarke said last week.
"I am very excited and passionate to pass on my knowledge to as many women as possible so they can learn how to recognise and handle potential safety issues - not just for themselves, but for friends and family," Ms Clarke said.
The two-hour classes, at the Oakgrove Community Centre in Narre Warren South, are an annual event paid for from ward funds provided by Casey councillor Michael Farley.
Bookings are still available for the November 5-19 classes, which will run from 7-9pm. The classes cover issues including home safety, bag snatching and safety in car parks.
Ms Clarke is an accredited women's self-defence specialist with eight years' teaching experience.
Cr Farley, who allowed himself to be "manhandled" for the photograph, joked that having his arm twisted "is what normally happens at council briefings".
Cr Farley, who is familiar with restraint techniques from his work as a part-time security officer, said they were a valuable self-defence skill for women.
Bookings: 9704 2781. Participants must be in good health.
