Police patrol wins praise over ute pursuit

31 Aug, 2009 09:39 AM
A STOLEN ute was clocked travelling at 165kmh during a police pursuit that began in Berwick and ended in Cardinia with the arrest of two occupants.

Police said they gave chase when a stolen Ford XR8 ute took off from an industrial area off Clyde Road at 3.15am last Wednesday.

The pursuit lasted 13 minutes before the ute finally pulled over in Ballarto Road, Cardinia.

The driver, a 31-year-old Seaford man, and his 21-year-old female passenger from Cheltenham were arrested and are assisting police with their inquiries.

The driver was expected to be charged with a range of traffic and criminal offences, while the passenger was expected to be charged with car theft.

Acting Sergeant Duncan Bartley, of Endeavour Hills Police, praised his members for the way they handled the incident.

"It was a great result with two people arrested for some pretty serious offences and, more importantly, nobody ending up hurt.

"We had a fairly junior crew on and it's a credit to them the way they kept their composure under extremely intense circumstances."
